Learn if your brakes may have an issue

You shouldn’t hear any brake noises

The bottom line is that you shouldn’t hear any brake noises in modern cars. Brakes have been engineered and fine tuned to be as quiet as possible, even in the face of the extreme friction, pressure, and heat they experience. The silence is accomplished with noise dampening techniques like brake pad shims and anti-rattle clips.

Over time, however, after your vehicle has racked up some miles, you may start to hear some squealing or other brake noises. The problem is, when these noises aren’t too loud or disruptive, drivers can get used to them, develop a tolerance, and think they are normal, which can be a mistake. Even slight brake noises may indicate a larger problem. The safest route is to make an appointment to have your brakes checked.

What makes brake noises?

When brake issues occur they usually produce noises like grinding, squealing, squeaking, or rattling.

Brake squealing or squeaking – Brake squealing and squeaking often occurs when your brakes are cold and begin to overheat but can also be indicative of a larger problem. Squeaking brakes might be caused by worn brake pads, foreign debris in the brakes, glazed rotors or drums, or lack of lubrication on the drum backing plate.

Brake grinding – If you hear a grinding sound it usually means the brake pad or shoe material is worn away, leading to metal on metal contact. This is both dangerous to drive with and can create more expensive repairs down the road. Grinding is typically caused by worn brake pads or shoes, or by a sticking caliper or wheel cylinder.

Brake rattling – Brake rattle is a common noise heard by drivers and most often occurs when they lift their foot off the brakes. This noise is usually a results of the brake pads expanding due to the heat. However, this noise should not be consistent and should not occur when you have your foot on the brake pedal. If you hear rattling, you should bring your car into HEART Certified Auto Care for a brake check.

If you hear brake squeaking, grinding, or rattling, then bring your car into HEART to determine what the problem is and fix it.

Fix your brakes at the first sign of trouble

As a general rule, if you hear brake noises, you should bring your car into the shop to have it checked. If there is a problem with your brakes, it will only get worse if you don’t fix it as soon as possible. If you wait, then the repairs can become much more expensive than they otherwise would be. More serious than that, your car may be unable to stop in an emergency situation, which can lead to a serious accident.

Hearing brake noises? Bring your car into one of HEART Certified Auto Care’s three Chicago Area locations today to have them checked out.
